Uprooted Sunshine Presents: Shanghai Vibrations

Billed as a “mini-dub festival,” Shanghai’s #1 dub soundsystem has indeed put together a long line-up of Vibronics + Madu Messenger, Steve Barker, Zenmala Jalama, The Uprooted Sunshine Soundsystem (which in itself includes quite a few local DJs), and Komodo, who we just interviewed. If you like Jamaica, having fun, or grimacing due to musical enjoyment you should definitely be there.

The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu

10:00-4:00

50 RMB

Magnetic

For a different, somewhat rockier spin on Dub head down to Anar (down the street at LOgO is their reggae night, so you can hit THREE different Jamaican music spots in one night if you want) where Magnetic, longtime rock and jazz scenesters moving a new direction, do their thing with delay pedals, grooves, and haunting trumpet calls over empty battlefields.*

Anar, 129 Xingfu Lu near Fahuazhen Lu

10:00-1:30

No Cover

*Last bit stolen from Johnny Depp’s hilarious Charlie Rose interview around the time of Fear and Loathing ’s release.

Saturday:

Commix

The Jamaican thing JUST DOESN’T STOP! Okay, D ‘n B isn’t actually Jamaican, but there’s a connection there. This duo is from Cambridge (UK not Massachusetts, sadly) and are a big deal, for they are the only dudes other than Goldie to put a record out on his label. I’m telling you, I try not to put Shelter shit on here constantly, but they keep programming interesting, different stuff, and bring in names from out of town, so what can I do? Commix will be supported by Phreaktion’s own Siesta, Viceroy, Abruzzi Spur, MC Didje, and MC ChaCha.

The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu

10:00-4:00

60 RMB

Sunday:

Blues is a Feeling

Blues is totally not Jamaican! Whew! Wash out the island sunshine with some more weather-appropriate music so you can be suitably depressed on Monday. I’m kidding too much here, everyone knows that blues music isn’t depressing, but it does deal with the difficulties of life and the fun you sort of know you shouldn’t be having. The great Ronnie Williams is joined by Joe Zhao, J. J. Davis, and Chang

The Melting Pot, 10 Hengshan Lu near the giant bowling pin, and not so near to Yongjia Lu and Wulumuqi Lu

10:00-1:00

No cover

Layabozi is a web magazine about music in Shanghai today, with a sprinkle of the extra-mural and a tart sassiness—without ever being cloying. We take our inspiration from the snack which is both exotic (to us) and down home, and from which we take our name: Spicy Duck Necks.
